Attendees will leave feeling educated and empowered with real strategies to address ethical challenges within product development, marketing, and design spaces

Founder, Authentic Design
Surya Vanka is a transdisciplinary designer who has worked at the leading edge of physical and digital experiences. He is founder of Authentic Design, president of the Seattle Design Festival and chair of Interaction Week 2019. Surya was director of user experience at Microsoft, a tenured professor of design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a fellow at the prestigious Center for Advanced Study. He is creator of Design Swarms method, a light weight design technique used in business, non-profit and education worldwide. Surya won the Microsoft Engineering Best Practice Awards twice, Ohio State University 50th Anniversary Distinguished Design Alumnus Award, Microsoft Achievement Award, Accessibility Achievement Award, World Brand Congress Leadership Award and several other industry recognitions. He frequently keynotes speeches at the most prestigious conferences and has won top speaker awards three times. He is judge for Singapore Design Awards, and reviver for design curricula for universities in the United States and Europe. Surya’s design work has appeared in numerous publications and news programs, including TEDx, Form, I.D., Design Council, WIRED, Interactions, the BBC and National Public Radio. Surya is the author of two books on design, several publications, and has taught design on every continent but Antarctica.
Carey Jenkins is CEO of Substantial, a world-class product development studio, serving a diverse set of clients - from Fortune 50s like Google and Amazon to emerging start-ups and social impact organizations.
Carey has spent 17+ years leading large interdisciplinary teams and multi-channel projects. She started at Substantial as one of its first engagement managers, combining her expertise in client services, product management, and software development methodologies. She was elevated to Director, then VP of Client Services, leading both delivery and business development before being named CEO in June 2018.
A people-focused CEO, Carey stresses the importance of relationships, whether that involves employees, clients, or community partners. She passionately believes that healthy relationships are the foundation of any successful team, project, or company.
Carey, originally from Louisiana, spent formative years in New York and New Orleans before finding a home in Seattle over a decade ago. When she’s not leading the Substantial team, she can be found spending quality time with her husband and 5 year old daughter.

In her 20+ years of working in advertising, marketing, media, and communications, she has been on the forefront of leading brands and agencies through transformative times to unlock growth and opportunity. She is considered a trusted and visionary leader with a passion for building audience-centric marketing and communications eco-systems for major brands to effectively and ethically usher them into the era of “the living brand” where visibility, relevancy, and acting in the moment are critical to success.
